Whether you’re cycling forgotten forest roads or wanting to explore the rive gorges by kayak, the surrounding Garden Route National Park and Tsitsikamma area is host to a number of unique adventure activties. These are our firm favourites and are easily done as full day or half day trips from The Fernery Lodge and Spa.

Bungy jump from or walk the length of Africa’s Highest Bridge

 

For the adrenalin seeker, a bungy jump from the legendary Bloukrans bridge is a must do activity when visiting the Garden Route. Easily reached from The Fernery Lodge and Spa, the spectacle of engineering, which spans the magnificent Bloukrans River gorge, can also be traversed by means of a guided walk.

Explore the majestic Storms River by kayak or lilo

 

Set within the magnificent Tsitsikamma National Park, The Storms River’s entrance into the Indian Ocean is a dramatic, steep sided river gorge. Explore this beautiful mix of ocean and rockface by kayak or lilo, as the gorge becomes even more spectacular as you navigate each twist and turn.

Zip-line through the Indigenous forest canopy

 

This unique adventure activity allows you to travel from point to point within the indigenous canopy of the Tsitsikamma Forest. Suspended by safety harness, your guide will point out the variety of tree species, as well as the fascinating story of one Africa’s most varied and unspoint stretches of Afromontane forest.

Tube the mighty Storms River

 

Take a guided tubing adventure following the Storms River from inland to it’s entrance into the ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park. This unique and exciting experience allows you a glimpse at the hidden world of the Tsitsikamma’s rivers, indigenous forest and mind-boggling natural scenery.

Explore the forest on a Segway

 

Glide through the indigenous forest or enjoy a tour of the Strorm River Village on a two-wheeled Segway. Your guided tour includes a lesson on how to handle your easy-to-use Segway, before setting off on your two-wheeled adventure.

Hire one of our Mountain Bikes and explore the forests

 

Mountain bikes can be hired from The Fernery. There are a number of rural roads, forest trails and tracks within the area which are wonderful to explore by bike. We have a range of modern mountain bike options, as well as helmets to choose from.

Enjoy our Guided Hike to the Storms River Mouth

 

This easy-going and gentle hike takes you through the coastal thicket and unique fynbos vegetation of Tsitsikamma National Park to reach the suspension bride across the spectacular Storms River Mouth. From here you have the option of crossing the swing bridge to acend to the viewing platform on the opposite side for spectacular views across this incredible coastline.

Cycle the Historic and traffic-free Storms River Pass

 

A bicycle trip of a lifetime, hire one of our moutain bikes and take to this spectacular and historic road, built by renowned engineer Thomas Bain. Once the main route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, until the contruction ofthe current N2 motorway, this tranquil road takes you through ancient forests to cross the Storms River and finish back at The Fernery.

Guided by our qualified horticulturalist, this interperative and informative garden tour will open up the magic world of plant diversity and the ecology that makes The Fernery such a unique natural environment.

Visit the ancient Tsitsikamma Big Tree

 

Estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old, this immense Outeniqua Yellowood tree (Podocarpus latifolius) stands proudly in a tranquil forest setting, accessed via wooden boardwalks. Apart from the view of the tree itself, two short and well-marked forest trails can be enjoyed here.

Enjoy a lunch at the Fynboshoek Secret Cheese Farm

 

Hidden away in the most rural of surrounds, this artisan cheese farm offers the most creative lunches centred around their speciality…cheese! A not to be missed culinary experience within easy reach of The Fernery.

Visit the community Honeybush Tea project

 

Known by the indigenous people of the area for its healing properties and health benefits, Honeybush is contains 23 species and is endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom. This nearby community project focuses on growing, harvesting and producing this unique tea, with a drive to create employment and opportunity for rural families.

Hike the Dolphin Trail

 

This magnificent 4-day slackpacking hike along the Tsitsikamma coastline, is accompanied by experienced guides with overnight stays in comfortable accommodation, and all meals included.
