What to pack
When hiking in Tsitsikamma National Park
Here’s a list of items you should consider bringing:
Clothing
- Breathable Layers: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing for warm days and a warmer layer like a fleece for cooler evenings.
- Rain Jacket: Tsitsikamma can experience sudden showers, so pack a waterproof jacket that fits your day pack.
- Comfortable Hiking Pants or Shorts: Choose quick-drying materials.
- Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun.
- Buff or Scarf: Useful for sun protection, warmth, or even as a makeshift mask.
- Sturdy Hiking Boots or Shoes: Ensure they are well broken-in to avoid blisters.
- Extra Socks: Consider moisture-wicking socks, and pack an extra pair in case they get wet.
Gear
- Backpack: A comfortable, well-fitting daypack with enough space for all your essentials.
- Water Bottle or Hydration Pack: Stay hydrated with at least 2-3 liters of water.
- Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, and other high-energy snacks.
- Map and Compass/GPS: Even on marked trails, it’s good to have navigation tools.
- Headlamp or Flashlight: For early morning starts or in case you’re delayed.
- First Aid Kit: Include blister treatment, bandages, antiseptic, painkillers, and any personal medication.
- Multi-tool or Knife: Useful for various tasks.
- Emergency Whistle: In case you need to signal for help.
- Mobile Phone and Power Bank: For communication and taking photos, plus a power bank for extra battery life. Note there are areas where there is no signal.
- Trekking Poles: Helpful for stability on rough or steep terrain.
Optional
- Binoculars: Great for bird watching or spotting wildlife and a Bird Identification app.
- Camera: If you want to capture the beautiful scenery.
- Insect Repellent: There can be mosquitos or other insects, especially near water.
- Sunscreen: High SPF to protect your skin.
- Towel and Swimsuit: If you plan to swim in rock pools or rivers. Please make sure you have checked tides and currents and never turn your back on the sea.
- Lightweight Blanket or Sitting Mat: Useful for breaks or picnics.
Food
- Packed Lunch: If you’re going on a longer hike.
- Hot Drinks: A thermos with tea or coffee can be comforting in cooler weather.
This list should help you be well-prepared for a day of hiking in the beautiful Tsitsikamma region!
The Tsitsikamma coastline is notorious for rough sea conditions.
Drinking water is always a challenge during the heat of summer, especially as many of the fresh water streams may not be running.
The end goal – the magnificent waterfall and swimming pool along Tsitsikamma’s Waterfall Trail.
